This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Very detailed about the people and conditions he encounters. He does not display the racial egotism and assumption of superiority common to that era even while writing about the lack of sanitation, lack of personal cleanliness, and poverty endemic to the western interior of China at that time. In fact, he clearly considers the Europeans who hold such views in contempt and believes they are self-styled "experts" who have only experienced the Chinese from behind their Western enclaves, have never truly encountered the people and do not know what they are talking about. While he is exactingly truthful about the conditions in which those he meets live, and does not gloss over the reality of their lives, he does so without assuming any natural superiority. He goes into detail about the differences between Western behaviors and expectations and the Chinese way of doing things which he encounters all along the way and paints pictures of frustration on his part with a most humorous brush. You will encounter some of the florid writing common to the first decade of the 20th century, especially when he is describing the landscape, but actually very little of it. But beyond all the amusing and dreadful things he recounts, his private thoughts and musings are eerily prescient. I would like to have known this man.Product details

Through five republics on horseback; being an account of many wanderings in South America George Whitfield Ray Books Reviews
an eye-opening documentary regarding the treatment and abuse of natives in South America by "civilized" interlopers. a somewhat horrifying description of the rape and pillage of the land, the people and their values held for thousands of years. made me sad and mad to read this book.
