Against The Tide Theresa Tomlinson 9780552561662 Books
A beautiful, absorbing, exciting and touching book encompassing three novels about the close knit fisher families of North East Yorkshire. In Beneath Burning Mountain Anna Langtoft and her sister Polly and brother Joseph, face the terror of the ruthless press gangs who invade their village looking for young men and boys to force into the navy, at end of the 18th century. Anna and Polly hide their brother Joseph and their friend, Tommy.
Based around the true story of rebellion of the Yorkshire folk against the press gangs, when a landslide destroys their home, they count on the close knit community to show their heart and mettle and help them build up an abandoned and broken former mansion they have moved in to.
In The Flither Pickers Liza Welford comes to grips with her sister Irene's pregnancy, a rescue mission of a life boat as well as a family tragedy of the past. Against the background is the British soldiers going off to south Africa to fight in the Anglo-Boer War and the pioneering of photography
Linked beautifully in with this story encompassing some of the same characters is The Herring Girls in which Dory Lythe after her mother falls seriously ill, she is determined to keep her family out of the cruel work house. And joins a band of herring girls who do the grueling and backbreaking work of gipping and packing fish in all kinds of weather and under hard conditions.
A wonderful book gets into the life of the poor and hard working folk of the Yorkshire coast. People both hardy and with big hearts
It is instructive as to the harrowing difficulties Britain's working classes have endured in the preceding centuries
