Chef Rupert’s picking up the pieces after a catastrophe; he’s lost his love, his business, his home and even his dog, and he’s trying to make a fresh start. Linking up with Jake almost on a whim he soon finds himself involved in a strange tale of organic farming, migrant workers, greed and even possibly murder – in the midst of which the attraction is still there, but Rupert’s not sure whether the feeling’s mutual or if he’s ready to try for a proper relationship again just yet …
The Bridge on the River Wye edition by Adam Fitzroy Literature Fiction eBooks
This one works on so many levels--characters (besides the MC's Rupert and Jake), plots and sub-plots and mini-plots, and just plain wonderful language. There is some angst and adventure, but it's all mostly level-headed and without hold-your-breath narrative.Rupert is a bit of a dreamer, somewhat naïve even in his 30's, and determined to prove himself as a responsible entrepreneurial chef in his native England as he did in Australia--which he has fled because of his boyfriend's peccadillos. Jake is a wonder boy of sorts (maybe late 20s), and a saint because he is trying to save his late brother's organic farming legacy while also caring for his sister-in-law and niece and nephew.
That they hook up, so to speak (there is not much sex here until the late part of the book, and much of it is muted), is simply a result of Rupert's inherent nature--if something strikes him as wrong, he goes looking for why, and an encounter at a farmer's market in London provides him with the spark to get the narrative rolling.
Adam Fitzroy has created a wonderful family here, and you will fall in love with them deeply as it goes on and on. Bravo!

The Bridge on the River Wye edition by Adam Fitzroy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The characters are so rich and real, and the story grows organically from their respective situations. Even minor characters are carefully fleshed out. It's a pleasure to read something so lovingly and subtly crafted.
I read this book when it was first published by Manifold Press, a UK publisher that puts out really great work, and I should have written a review then, because this one deserves praise. In fact, anything written by Adam Fitzroy is going to be well written and a pleasure to read; this book is no exception. There is a mystery here, and a slowly developing romance that never seems certain, with realistic characters and some great dialogue. Do yourself a favor and grab this one - and other books written by Fitzroy - you'll be astonished that this quality of work is found in a genre generally pretty bereft of good reading. Kudos to Fitzroy for continuing to write books that are A level all around.
A somewhat languid, enjoyable mystery with a spicing of romance.
This one is not as good as Make do and Mend or whatever the title is. It is still a VERY nice and gratifying book. It is a though the preparation time for this book was less. All the characters are still good, but the granularity of them is coarser. Still recommended.
